What is Lip Blushing?

Updated: Nov 11, 2022

If you're like me then you don't have the energy to apply lip liner, PLUS lip stick, PLUS lip gloss. And maintain it during the day? LOL, who's got time for that? I am a working mom who shaved half my head to save time in the morning! So when I heard of semipermanent cosmetic tattoo designed to enhance your lip color and shape, I was so in!

What is Lip Blushing?

Lip Blushing is a type of semipermanent cosmetic tattoo designed to enhance your lip color and shape. It can create a bit of fullness from just adding shape or design to the lip. It can correct or cover a scar on the lip. It is not just about adding color to the lips it is so much more.

How long does it take?

The whole process takes about one to three hours and leaves lips much more vibrant. It is important to note that Lip pigmentation can fade by as much as 50% within the first week after your treatment.

Does lip blushing hurt?

Your artist will apply a numbing product to your lips beforehand to help minimize pain and discomfort. Thank you, Velamina for being patient with me.

How Permanent is it?

Lip blushing is considered a semipermanent procedure. This means you will need to repeat the process every few years to maintain your results. Frequent lip exfoliation, sun exposure, and smoking can all make pigment fade quicker.

Potential side effects and precautions

Lip blushing carries the same side effects and risks of traditional tattooing. Minor side effects are to be expected, though they’ll decrease as your lips heal.

These include:

- swelling

- redness

- pain

How Much does lip blushing cost?

Average cost: $400

On average, permanent makeup procedures cost a minimum of $400-$600 per session. Due to the multiple layers required in lip blushing, the cost may go higher. However, your total cost will vary based on your artist expertise, where you live and other key factors.

How should you prepare for a lip blushing appointment?

To prevent bruising, you’ll want to avoid blood thinners like ibuprofen, aspirin, alcohol, fish oil, and vitamin E for severals days leading your appointment. If you have a history of cold sores caused by the herpes simplex virus, ask your doctor for an antiviral medication like Valtrex or Zovirax, for you take in the days before and after your procedure.

Pre-care advice:

- Keep lips exfoliated and moisturized before your procedure

- No fillers or injections to the lips at least 4 weeks prior to you appointment

- No hair removal, waxing or shaving on the lips for 1week before your procedure

- Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water prior to your appointment

How long does lip blushing take to heal?

Lips will be swollen and tender for 24-48 hours after getting a lip blush tattoo. During the lip blush healing process, your lips will scab, flake and feel extremely dry. Keep your lips moisturized with a product provided by your artist, lip drying can be painful, uncomfortable and can cause chapped lips that will interfere with the healed results. As your lips heal, you will find that the skin will exfoliate itself, this is a normal process from day 3 up to day 8, until this is occurring you may find your lip colour looking patchy. It is important to moisturize during this time as it will speed up cell recovery and get you out of this stage quicker. Do not force or pull off any dry skin, as it will interfere with your healed results.
