I choose to use only the best ingredients on my son's skin. As you know, I am the product label reader in the household. I understand that your skin is the largest organ of the integumentary system. And if things like a nicotine patch can adsorb into your system what else are we allowing our body to adsorb?
I did a little research on what ingredients are in Honest Company and Babyganics Bug Spray. Their bug spray is made from essential oils and a carrier oil. Hmmm... well I can make that! How do I know the oils were distilled at the correct temperature and they weren't sprayed with toxic chemicals? So I chose to make my own bug spray.
Recipe
80% Surface Bassu Oil (babassu oil)
5 drops of Peppermint oil
20 drops of Citronella oil
10 drops of Lemongrass oil
2 drops of Clove
10 drops of Cinnamon bark
Why Bassu Oil?
First of all its smells amazing. Brazilian women have been using babassu oil on their skin and hair for centuries. Surface Bassu oil is light weight and won't clog your pores like coconut oil. It also melts at body temperature. This is a wonderful carrier oil and can be easily used in a 2 oz glass spray bottle. For more information about bassu oil click here. Why Young Living Oils?
Young Living is the only essential oil company that owns their farms. They are the only company that plants the seeds for the plants. They grow the plants, harvest the plants, distill the oils, test the oils for quality, package the oils, and mail the oils to me. They make sure the oils are distilled at the proper temperature and the heat isn't destroying the quality. Young living has set the bar to the quality of essential oils.

I love the way the bug spray smells. I will say that it does spray on in streams. It is made to spray and rub evenly onto your skin. I made a bottle to leave in my son's bag for school. I also made a bottle to leave at the back door for when we walk the dog.
I hope that you're inspired to make your own bug spray. Feel free to leave me a comment if you have any other questions.
